Abstract

Reforming the Syrian higher education (HE) sector can play an important role in supporting Syria when the country emerges from conflict and transitions to recovery. However, this reform should be based on a deep understanding of the sector's current problems. Otherwise, we risk reproducing the same inequalities and oppressive structures that contributed to the conflict. The purpose of this article is to provide up-to-date knowledge for policymakers and researchers on the current situation of the Syrian HE sector. This article will answer the following question: what is the impact of the conflict on HE in Syria? To do so, a systematic review of the literature has been conducted and evidence from 20 articles that research the impact of the conflict on some aspects of the HE sector in Syria have been synthesised. The evidence collected from these articles suggests nine different themes, which provide insights into the impact of the conflict on HE in Syria. The article concludes by discussing these findings and providing recommendations for policymakers and areas for future research.
